Nightcrawler! - Film Review - Gyllenhaal as Twisted as Ever!

I went to the Cineworld Unlimited screening of Nightcrawler recently, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as what I believe to be a rather manipulative, clever, and twisted sociopath who, with immense drive, works his way up the world of underground freelance journalism, that focuses on crimes and emergencies.

It is clear to see that Gyllenhaal lost weight for this role, but I don't know whether it was this, or the big screen, or the cinematography that just made his well-known, rather large eyes pop out even more. It definitely added to the creepiness of the character.

Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo and Riz Ahmed convey their roles so well - definitely worth some awards me thinks. Along with Dan Gilroy who wrote and directed (his debut) this great film.

The story itself is one that really questions your morals; the character films car accidents, shootings, fires and the like when or just after they have happened (to supply to Russo's TV News programme). But they are filming people that are horrifically injuring or even dead - Gyllenhaal's character is sometimes first on scene, before the police and emergency crews - he just films them - doesn't attempt to help them in any way. Now, I don't know much about American news coverage, and I know Gyllenhaal's character goes to the extreme to get the perfect shots, but it still seems quite shocking that it happens in some form in the journalism world.

It is a great film to watch, and I really do recommend you all to watch it, if you get the chance - I feel it is one of Gyllenhaal's best performances, which says a lot as he is always amazing in each of his roles.
