Often it is not always just what you know, but also WHO you know when it comes to finding that perfect job.
Someone you are connected to, like your family, friends, lecturers, aquaintances could be in the career of your interest, or know someone who is; and even if you just get some work experience with them, you are that much closer to getting into you desired career.
It is your task to get to know such person well, and make a good impression, in order to get a step in the right direction. And if you don't make the most out of the connections you have, then it is a wasted opportunity.
When interning or on work experience, really make sure to make that good impression by doing a little bit more, being positive, creative and doing your best - and while there try to get to know as many of the people that work there as possible. If you do, they're more likely to remember you when there is a job opening.
Let me know your experiences with how useful having connections are, or if you have any other graduate tips that are particularly helpful.
