When is the best time to start applying for a job??

I want to know when the best time to apply for jobs are?

I will have finished my modules and assignments by the middle of April. Although I will still have my 18,000 word dissertation to do over the summer, due in September.

I wanto make sure I devote a lot of time to my dissertation, to get a really good grade, and write a really good piece of work. So does that mean I should get an average, most likely retail job over the summer? Also, I will still have my Uni house until end of August. While dong so try and get some work experience.

Or do I start applying for the proper full-time jobs in April? And either say I am free from September, or start as soon as they might hire me, and try and fit my dissertation around it?

I am slightly terrified about going into the big wide working world - so is it better to do it slightly sooner than later?

Please give me your advice, it would be much appreciated.
