Kingsman: The Secret Service! Initial Film Review!!

Kingsman: The Secret Service is very postmodern, seemingly used to add humour, make comment on society, and add a twist on the normal spy action film.

References to other spy movies and TV programmes, and the genre in general were clever e.g. James Bond. And I love how British it felt, particularly how it merged more modern urban Britain with the traditional, sophisticated Britain.

The actual action itself was good too, and I like that the way it was filmed felt as if it were a game, and comic book style - which obviously makes sense as the film is based on a comic book series (which I now would like to read). This is shown th the high-action fighting and chasing scenes, plus there is a very comic book feel when the heads of the people explode - most likely because of the use of bright colours and slow-motion.

The depiction of women isn't great - with the use of partial nudity and the voyeur, as well as female's being seen as weak, or at least weaker than the males like how Roxy is afraid of heights. However, the two main females - the new Kingsman recruit Roxy, and Valentine's second in command, Gazelle. The latter of which can certainly kick some butt! Plus she does so with her great artificial legs/feet - or in this case spikes. Which I suppose is an added plus as it is great to see someone 'disabled' shown as powerful and ass-kicking, or in this regard, slicing.

The film has some big names: Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine; who are great, as well as some newbies such as the lead, Taron Egerton who really shines in this in terms of humour, feeling and action scenes.

I have a feeling this will be a marmite film - people who get the postmodern modern, poke-fun side of things will love. Others who take it at face value may find it cheesy, which in fact it isn't really.

Let me know what you think of the film!
